5 Things to Consider Before Getting a Car

Posted by biboybob Sunday, March 20, 2011 0 comments

So you are starting to get annoyed with the hassle of being a daily commuter and convinced yourself that you need a car. Before you get too excited, I'd like to share with you some of the things that I considered in my quest of getting mine (hopefully very soon). I must warn you though, I am not a car guru nor have been driving cars for a long time:

1. Budget - Unless your parents are giving you the car, this will ultimately drive which car you will be getting. Whether you'll get yours using cash or credit, the key here is to not use up all of your savings. Bear in mind that aside from the actual cost of the car, there are at least 3 things that will surely bleed your wallet: insurance, maintenance costs, and fuel costs. Having the capability to buy a car is NOT enough, you also need to be capable of owning one.

Also, a car cannot be considered an investment, as it loses around 20% of its monetary value the moment you take it out of the dealer shop, and will continually depreciate every year.

2. Usage and Size - If you are just using your future car for going to and from work and going out with friends, then a small or a subcompact (4- and 5-seaters) is the right one for you. Cars of these classes are not just easier to drive, but are also usually fuel-efficient. Do you need more space? Hatchbacks are very good-looking, but will not be sufficient if you think you need a trunk.

If you plan to go somewhere with your large family over weekends, then you'll need a bigger car (7-seaters and up). New designs for pick-ups are also getting very stylish nowadays that they can be your utility vehicle and at the same time double as your everyday car. Remind yourself though that the bigger the car, the bigger its price tag and the higher the insurance costs it usually gets.

3. Used or New - If you don't mind the cost, then I'd say go for a brand new car. It will save you from the surprises (the bad kind) a used car usually gives, and will keep your mind at peace for around 3 years. But if you are short of funds, getting a 2nd-hand car is more logical. Just make sure you bring a trusted mechanic with you, as looking for used cars can be a bit tricky especially after typhoon Ondoy submerged thousands of cars last 2009.

4. Make/Brand - Japanese brands like Toyota, Mitsubishi, and Honda still dominate the Philippine market today. Korean cars like Hyundai/Kia are quickly catching up, while Chinese car makers are still struggling to make their mark. Each of them has their own good or bad reputation, but if you are not loyal to a brand, I think it is wiser to read and research about a particular car model rather than looking at a brand in general.

5. Colors/Designs/Features - These things sometimes become deal-breakers. In my case, I was inclined to getting a Toyota Vios but then the 2011 Hyundai Accent turned out to have better features despite being cheaper. The design is also more modern, as opposed to the simplistic style of the Vios. I have a friend who wanted a certain car model, but backed out when he learned that the color he likes is not available. You may also want to check the safety, audio connectivity, instrument panels, and other features that will matter in the long run.

My biggest piece of advice to someone who is getting a car, used or new: Research! Try to learn as much as you can about your target car. Read reviews, listen to current owners, and ask every possible question to the dealers.

Do not rush. The trick here is, think about whether after 5 years, you still see yourself driving and enjoying your choice of car. This is so you don't end up like those who regret buying a car and do not have the capability to get a new one (because they're still paying for something they actually hate).

Status Report ;-D

It's been a while since I stopped by this dying blog, thanks to a surprisingly boring Sunday that I had the chance to write again and make myself a little bit useful (I hope).

So, how have you been this past year? As for me, a lot happened since my last post:

- went out of town and actually celebrated my birthday (first time in years), for free.

- stopped buying anime toys/figures (for the meantime).

- accepted a job for another company, resigned from my current work, only to retract it for some reasons (and got blacklisted hehe).

- went to the US, which turned out to be my best out-of-country trip, so far (next to my paid vacation with pocket money trip to St.Paul).

- was able to see the Grand Canyon!

- was able to see and experience snow, loved it for a week and hated it after.
- was able to watch Kobe Bryant play live (I admit he's good, but still didn't like him).

- learned to cook a few common Filipino dishes.

- celebrated Christmas with may folks, together.

- celebrated the New Year at home, looking forward to March 4.

- got myself a new pup, a boy shih tzu I named Yoshi (now 3 months young).
- got bitten by Yoshi and received a total of 9 injections in 2 weeks because of it.

- became a "tito" to Ivan, my sister's baby boy. :D

- got myself a new phone and felt guilty by doing so.

I may have forgotten something, but these sum up what I've gotten into for the last 11 months. Hopefully, I get to share more of what's coming for me this 2011 via this site. No promises, though. Sana, sipagin ako. :P

PSP 5.50 GEN-D3 Upgrade

Posted by biboybob Thursday, March 18, 2010 2 comments

Custom Firmware 5.50 GEN-D3 (Final Release)

Steps:
1. Siguraduhin na ang PSP nyo ay hackable* (PSP-1000, PSP-2000 v1 at v2) at may CFW na at least 5.00 M33.

2. Download ang mga files dito. I-extract at dapat may 1 file at 2 folders na lumabas.

2. E bakit kelangan mag-upgrade?

3. Ah ok. Pano malalaman yung Firmware ng PSP? Pumunta sa Settings menu ng PSP, select System Settings, scroll down and select System Information. Yung System Software, yun yung Firmware.

Macross Saga Jollibee Kids Meal

Posted by biboybob Monday, March 15, 2010 3 comments

When I learned that Jollibee is releasing Macross toys as part of their Kids Meals, I immediately went to the nearest mall to get one. I can't remember the last time I bought kiddie meals to get toys as they usually make me disappointed, but this series sounded promising somehow. I wanted to get all 3 variants but then I realized it is unfair for my tummy to receive 3 regular Yums, so I only bought one and chose Veritech Battloid (whatever), more rightfully known as the VF-1 Valkyrie:
A white robot with two weapons at the back and a gun. I would say he is unexpectedly detailed for a 69-peso meal freebie.
He looks like a real VF-1S and even has Macross logos. His arms and legs are moveable. The gun trigger can also be moved but I am not sure what it does.
Looking closely, you'll notice some bad paint jobs shouting something like "You only get what you pay for!"

I hate those empty molded legs that made it look cheap (well, it really is cheap) from waist below. You can't really do much with this toy but display on a boring study table.
This Combat Mecha (whatever) is a good toy, comparable to and even cheaper than some gashapons sold at TK. I'd say get this if you like Jollibee and Macross that much, go get the other 2 variants otherwise. Better yet, stop and save a few more P69.00 and get this instead.

DSLR Mania(c)

Posted by biboybob Sunday, March 7, 2010 8 comments

At binabasa yan, pinag-aaralan. Hindi yan pang-display. Yung photography, pinagtya-tyagaan.

Inggit talaga hehe. :)

Toys Versus A Jacket

Posted by biboybob Thursday, March 4, 2010 2 comments

Well it's this time of the year again: I am turning a year wiser in a few weeks. Parties have always been the norms for birthday celebrations, but it's something that I stopped having since I was a 14 or so. Kapag tinatanong ako ng tatay ko at ng iba ko pang relatives kung ano ang gusto kong handa at regalo, I either say "perahin nyo na lang" or "pahingi na lang ako ng pambili ng [insert worldly items here]".

That's because I try to get something that I want during my birthday. 2010 is Toys versus a jacket, and I am still torn between these three:

1.GX-43 Daimos - I've wanted to get this after I bought my GX-31 Voltes V robot but somehow something always get in the way. The fact that I am still thinking of getting this after a few failed attempts made it #1 on my list.

2.Masterpiece Optimus Prime - A little more expensive than my #1, but it can be said that this is the best Optimus Prime one can get for his money. I just hope there's still one available out there, with or without the trailer, just in case I decided to get this instead of Daimos. It will also be a good addition to my non-transforming Transformers.

3.Adidas Stormtrooper Jacket - Kung nakita ko lang 'to when I was in the US, binili ko na. But I didn't. A friend told me it is sold here locally, pricey though. But I doubt na magiging mas mahal kesa sa #1 and #2, kaya kung kukulangin budget ko, I'd be happy to settle with this kahit na kakabili ko lng ng ibang hoodies at sa office ko lang nagagamit kasi doon lang malamig.

You might be wondering why I posted this kind of entry earlier than usual. You guessed it right! Mas maaga, mas malaki chance kong maka-collect ng birthday gifts (aka. pera) from you my friends! Hehe. Kidding aside, I am still undecided so your views on which one I should get will be appreciated. :)
