[Anime] Shakugan no Shana

Infinite time stopped beating its heart, and humans burnt away without making any noise. Not one person notices as the world becomes dislocated and is covered in the flames of Guze.

Ano daw?! This is what I automatically shouted to myself as I watched this anime's first episode. The two-liner opening of the series introduces the whole idea of what this anime is all about.
The series revolves around a high school student Yuji Sakai, who, after meeting a girl Flame Haze (someone who protects the balance of the world) whom he named Shana (from the name of the sword she uses) learned that he is already dead. Apparently he is just a torch, a blue flame-like object that temporarily replaces dead humans as to not distract the world's balance. Torches eventually burn out, and the existence of that person will be forgotten forever.

Yuji and Shana later realized that among all the torches, only Yuji's torch has the ability to intensify its flame every night and thus will never burn out. For this reason, he became the target of Rinnes and Tomogaras, those who eat human existence to gain power. Shana later falls in love with Yuji, a feeling new to her as a heartless Flame Haze. Yuji does not want to be forgotten, and does not want to forget her friends, including Shana, and her family forever. Together, with the help of their friends, Yuji and Shana fight against the world's enemies.I would say this anime has a very unique concept. Instead of the enemies just eating human flesh, they eat existence, something that we never really cared about. Who would want to stay in this world without anyone knowing him? Who would want to have a happy life today, but be forgotten starting the next day?

The illustrations are great, although you wouldn't find something new in this series. The weapons and the characters' abilities are mostly common among animes. I think its story is the major thing that made it very popular. Unfortunately, Shakugan no Shana has not been shown in the Philippines yet. Maybe because of its uniqueness, local producers think that this might not draw as much viewers.
Shakugan no Shana consists of 23 episodes and a movie, try watching them here. It has been very popular in both manga and anime, that a second installment has been made recently.
